Moves to cut down on single use plastics need to be improved say Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats.
At the recent County Council meeting (15 May), councillors backed limited plans to tackle plastics use but Lib Dem calls for a more comprehensive approach were rejected by the Conservatives.
The muddled Conservative motion referred to plastic straws but not plastic cups, but worst of all, the Conservatives rejected the idea of bringing an action plan back to councillors so that further plastic reduction measures could be adopted. It was as if once the motion was passed, the Conservatives could go back to ignoring the problem.
"It was a decidedly surreal debate," said Cllr Lorna Dupré who proposed the Lib Dem amendment. "We ended up with everyone voting in favour of a motion that could just have been so very much better."
