Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats oppose the Conservative’s plans for a multi-million pound County Council HQ at Alconbury.
With the longer-term future of the County Council in doubt due to the review of local government proposed by Mayor Palmer, the Conservatives have nonetheless proposed an expensive new office building to be built at Alconbury.
The Lib Dems support the idea of moving the County Council offices out of Cambridge but any such plan needs to be financially advantageous, sensible in the medium term and helpful for the public.
Speaking at today’s County Council meeting, Lucy Nethsingha, Leader of the Lib Dem group said:
“This council is cutting front line services like children’s centres, failing to maintain our roads and struggling to meet demand in adult social care.
“A new headquarters is a luxury we simply cannot afford.”
Lib Dem councillors also expressed concern at the poor public transport links to Alconbury.
