Electrify the new East West Rail line and exclude diesel trains

"We are in a climate emergency and the government is not taking it seriously. The government simply cannot create a new railway line and then run polluting diesel trains on it.

"Please join me in demanding that the government builds a zero carbon railway with no diesel trains."

Aidan Van de Weyer, Liberal Democrat Candidate for Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

To the Secretary of State for Transport,

It is imperative that the East West Rail line is zero carbon from day 1. The use of diesel trains is incompatible with the climate emergency and cannot be allowed on this new line.

The East West Rail line must be designed with full provision for electrification along its whole length. The necessary investment must be included in the business case and funding arrangements.

If alternative technologies like batteries or hydrogen cells become viable, then overhead lines might not need to be installed. But allowing diesel trains to run on the line at all fails to demonstrate the government’s commitment to achieving zero carbon and to reducing air pollution.
